The World Museum of Mining,
located in Butte, opens on April 1st
each year and groups from all around the world
will descend upon the grounds for their annual
outing.
The 40+ acre site, located west
of the Montana Tech campus, preserves more than
a century of American mining and cultural
history and brings it to life. Visitors can
explore more than 50 structures, ranging from
the 100ft. high headframe of the
Orphan Girl Mine
to a faithful re-creation of a mining town
affectionately known as “Hell
Roarin’ Gulch”. Half of the displays at the
museum focus on the cultural and ethnic history
of an 1880s to 1920s mining town while the other
half provides a detailed look at the history of
mining technology.

Groups are guided throughout Hell
Roarin’ Gulch and the mine yard by former miners
who explain the mining process and reminisce
about their days working in Butte’s many mines.
Also available as an additional
or separate tour is our
Underground Mine
Tour, taking visitors 65 feet deep into the
2700 foot deep Orphan Girl Mine. The groups will
learn what true underground working conditions
were like for Butte’s hard rock miners. They
will see actual working equipment and hear many
fascinating stories. The underground mine tour
may be the most realistic and educational tour
the group ever takes!

The history of Butte and mining
is fascinating. We believe that we can provide
an educational experience that will stay in the
minds of your group, and one that will create an
appreciation for resources upon which we depend.
