Sponsor A Fallen Miner

The World
Museum of Mining is dedicated to preserving
important historical memories.
Remembering a
Fallen Miner
Spring
2008 will mark the ground breaking of our Miners
Memorial Garden. For the first time in Butte’s
history those who have lost their life due to a
mining, smelter, concentrator or railroad
accident will be memorialized on a wall in our
“Memorial Garden”. This wall will complement
the current memoriam dedicated to the Granite
Mountain Speculator fire victims.
The memorial
campus will include our Miners' Memorial Wall, a
donor structure, landscaping and historical
clips via audiovisual technology. The memorial
walls will be constructed of twenty polished,
black granite slabs (4ftX4ftX3cm). The granite
slabs will be sandblasted with the names of over
2,300 miners, railroad workers, mill/smeltermen
that lost their lives in the Silver Bow mining
district since 1865. The granite slabs will
then be mounted to resemble the Vietnam Veterans
Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C.. Please refer
to the attached architectural conceptual rending
for further detail.
One of Butte’s
popular historians, Jim “Curly” Harrington, has
compiled a listing of people that were killed.
The list has been used as a foundation
for the project. Those interested in sponsoring
a plaque can
search
the index for the name of a loved one. If the
name does not appear on the list, a person can
submit proof the individual died during his
shift at work. General donations can also be
dedicated to the completion of Butte’s first
Miners' Memorial Wall by
contacting the World Museum of Mining at PO Box
33, Butte MT 59703, or (406)723-7211. The total
financial requirement for memorial wall
construction is $100,000.00.
