Our Volunteer
Program
The
World Museum of Mining was founded in 1963 by
hard work and commitment of individuals who
realized the importance of preserving Butte's
mining and cultural heritage. They had the
foresight to recognize that Butte's future
citizens and visitors would seek knowledge of
the intricate workings of the mines and the
people who contributed to this era in America's
history. Since we are visited by thousands of
people each year, we employ a regular staff that
oversees the day-to-day operations of the
Museum. However, we need volunteers who want to
share their interest in Butte's history with our
treasured visitors.
The museum was
established by volunteers and it continues
to be supported by the valuable volunteers
working alongside staff. The volunteers are
the lifeblood of the organization.
Museum volunteers and docents currently work
in a wide variety of areas at the museum.
These include:
-
Archival
preservation and photograph scanning
-
Above ground tours
-
Underground Mine
Tours
-
Inventory and
cataloguing of the museum collections
-
Maintenance and
cleaning of exhibits

There are many other
areas of necessary work within the museum
that volunteers are needed for. If you are
interested in working with any of the
projects at the museum or if you have a
particular project you would like to
propose, please contact staff at the
museum. We Welcome Volunteers!
